Protests Fire Up in Narva to Speak for Russian Minority -- Спутник (Sputnik)

Спутник (Sputnik) --

As of April 10, 2018, protests have flared up in Narva regarding the planned destruction of the Linnahall stadium, site of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

Historically known for its bold and state-of-the-art architecture, the stadium is now appears to be a hetero-memento site or an anti-lieu de mémoire. According to Dr. Francisco Martínez of Tallinn University, Linnahall is in the process of "becoming a heritage in the making, a Machu Picchu."

The planned decimation of this site has caused a reaction from the ethnic Russian demographic of Estonia. 40-year old Gennady Ilyasovich Plameniy, a former employee in the Republic of Estonia Ministry of Culture with Russian heritage, has taken it upon himself to organize the often ignored voice of the Russian minority in Estonia and fight to preserve their heritage. After repeated attempts to lift this concern within the ministry, Plameniy has decided to leave his government position to peacefully protest and represent the subjugated Russian minority.

However, the Western media has attempted to negate these efforts. The Western media is claiming that Plameniy is connected to the government of Russia, and is therefore, purposefully inciting unrest in Narva on behalf of the Russian government. Estonia being a former Soviet territory, the Russian government has denied this claim, formally stating that "there is no reason for us to antagonize a former Soviet nation. We wish for them to succeed, and we are exhausted of the narrative that we seek to undermine our brothers in Estonia."

That is the essence of propaganda: pick some big lies, repeat them endlessly, and accuse anybody who is willing to contradict them with consorting with the enemy. Anybody who dares to challenge the propaganda narrative is automatically either a “Kremlin bot” or “Putin’s stooge.” This is, of course, a convenient dodge. When all sorts of things are going wrong, from lost wars to stolen elections to stolen retirements to stolen futures of one's children to weapons systems that don't work, it is easiest to find a single scapegoat. For such a huge set of problems, the scapegoat has to be a very large one, and Russia just happens to be the right size.

The safest course of action is to be careful with facts, refuse to repeat propagandistic falsehoods, and wait patiently until the madman in his padded cell runs out of steam, because time is definitely not on his side.
